GFD Firetruck

GOODLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT

The historic photo, taken by Thomas Franklin of The Record of North Jersey, conjures up two of America's most moving battle icons-the victorious World War II flag-raising at Iwo Jima and the National Anthem's defiant lyric celebrating the country's resiliency under attack-REMEMBER OUR 9/11 HEROES! A Few were the three firefighters in the photo-Dan McWilliams, George Johnson, and Billy Eisengrein This page is to show appreciation to the ones who volunteer and help protect the city from fires. The GFD is also the one that respond to any hazzardous waste spills. Hazzardous waste can mean a lot of things anymore, one example is someone putting gasoline or diesel in their vehicle and not paying attention and let fuel run on the ground. The GFD gets called to keep the area safe while the mess is being cleaned up. GFD also responds to any call where someone has ran over a gas meter, there may not be a fire but there is always potential one may start. They stand by at the 4th of July Fireworks Display and other events where fires may get started.
GFD is made up of one fulltime Fire Chief and the rest are volunteer firefighters. The volunteers are paid a set sum for any call they respond to. But I doubt any one of the firefighters do this for the pay. It takes dedication and wanting to help the community to have your free time and sometimes your paying job time interrupted to respond to a call for help. Not everyone is willing to volunteer to be woke up in the middle of night with the temperature around 0 degrees to run out scrape the ice from your vehicle's windshield and drive through snowpacked icy streets just to get to the firehouse. Then get the firehouse doors open and trucks out to go fight a fire somewhere. But they do it and get there because lives and property are at stake.
Thank goodness not all calls end up being dissasters, sometimes the call they respond to turn out to be false alarms or homeowners smelling something besides smoke from a fire. Thanks to Brad Parker for sharing this potty fire picture taken at 17th and Main. At times some calls can be almost comical just as this picture shows of the burning potty. Sometimes the GFD even do something fun like escorting Santa Claus to the downtown area! If you need help figuring out where to put your home smoke alarms give the GFD a call, someone will be glad to help. If you need to burn something in Goodland call the Fire Chief, he can issue you a burn permit if it is safe to do so.

I have tried to give the basics of our Goodland Fire Department. Return to this site for future updates. With help we will soon learn a lot more about the ones making up our GFD.
