I really feel odd with posting this Atta Girl Award but it is the only request I received for someone to get an extra pat on the back. So people I'm not Tooting my own Horn but posting it because it was suggested I receive it for doing this website. Thanks Alan I appreciate the kind words.

I think both the RFD and GFD should receive Atta Boys and Girls for all the time spent working with kids and showing them how to stay safe in case of a fire. It takes dedicated firefighters to volunteer their time to during the Fair, Flatlanders, and other school visits showing the kids safety lessons. Also the Women's Auxillary that the GFD has started to help victims of fires. Thanks to all the Firefighters and Auxillary for your services.

The First Recommended Award (by someone other than me) is given to Mike Hopper of Kansas Fish and Game. Mike heard the call of a family having a non responsive baby and joined the watch trying to locate the vehicle they were in. The parents called 911 unsure of their location on I-70 and their baby was not breathing. The dispatcher did a good job in asking questions to finally be able to give the parents directions plus notifying all the officers, deputies, EMS, etc about the situation. Mike was one of the first to find the vehicle and began CPR on the baby. I believe it was the Undersheriff, Roger Studer who then drove Mike and the baby to the hospital while Mike gave the baby the CPR. After all was said and done the baby survived and was doing well and released from the hospital. This was not the first time Mike was in the right place at the right time. Last Nov. he was the 1st one that found the criminals that had committed an armed robbery in Grinnell, Ks. He was traveling on I-70 at that time and heard the call about the robbers and saw them and their vehicle thus the crooks never made it out of Gove Co. Good Job Mike!

I wanted Dispatcher Darcy Frazier to have the current Atta Girl Award for the job she has been doing. She has been filling in for Communication Director Crissy Conger while Crissy is on maternity leave. Meantime Darcy has been taking care of her own job duties and doing the extra things that have to be done by the director. She needs the extra Pat on the Back for doing a Good Job!

Thank to GPD Officer Jim Gillespie and Deputy Burton Pianalto for having caught and arrested the ones that had committed several burglaries. It was a short time crime spree due to Pianalto having received some information from Thomas Co that tied in to the thefts in Sherman Co. Then Gillespie received information from a Goodland source that also led the investigation to the suspects. Search warrants were obtained by the officers and items found to charge the suspects with the thefts. I know some others were also involved in some degree with this investigation but the 2 getting the reward spent the most time preparing evidence to have a decent case against the suspects. Thanks to Jim and Burton for putting a stop to the thieves in such a short time. Good job Guys!!!!

The following was a SEARCH and RESCUE Mission. It began when Dispatcher Peterson was working and started hearing muffled cries for Help. This time not over the phone or radio but someone was yelling for help inside the building. He began the search and found out Co-worker Jason Showalter was trapped inside the elevator.

Peterson then radioed PD Officers and told them Showalter was trapped inside the elevator. GPD Officers Parker and Kroskey plus Undersheriff Butts all responded. They were unable to open the elevator doors to complete the Rescue. GPD Fire Chief Jensen was then called and he had the proper tools to open the door.

Thus Showalter was able to climb up out of the elevator. Showalter was a bit embarrassed but also glad that his co-workers were able to get him out. This was a job that caused some laughs because the one trapped was a co-worker but it could have been a citizen. The officers all reponded well and took care of the situation as fast as possible.

With this updating of Award's Page I'm giving the Atta Boys and Pats on the Back to the ones taking the time to visit with the Kids. If you can gain the trust of the children it helps in later years when the kids may have to deal with the Police or Sheriff Departments.

Deputy Burton Pianalto played the part of McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog. It may look like an easy job but if you ever had to wear that costume you would know better! I've been there, done that, and that mask is HOT!

Thanks to Deputy Roger Studer and Police Officer Cary Amos for taking McGruff around and talking to the kids. Explaining what to watch for and how to report possible crimes.

This Awards Page was meant to be for others to send in names to be given Atta Boys or Atta Girls. As of yet no one has requested or told about a co worker that they would like to see receive an extra pat on the back for a job well done.

So this time I'm giving the Atta Boys and Pats on the Backs to 2 of the GPD Officers, Bob Juleson and Rick Stramel. They went out of their way to help a family that was passing through Goodland. I hope I can explain this correctly on what they did to help. The people had a car that was having steering problems due to troubles with the vehicle's wheels. They were needing to get this car onto a trailer to haul it home. The Officers could have said the people would have to call a wrecker but instead they pushed and lifted the car onto the trailer by hand.

The only way I found out about this was the people that had been helped were so greatful they sent the officers a nice Thank You Card and a Big Package of Cookies. These 2 items were delivered to the Dispatch Room to be given to the Officers. I thought it nice that these guys helped someone when they really didn't have to do it.

I really had nothing to do with it but I've been told that Bob and Rick saw their thank you card but had been on days off when the items arrived so time they returned to work they DID NOT even see a cookie. UMMMMM seems their co workers took care of that part for them!

Good Job Bob and Rick!!

That leaves me the oppurtunity to give my own Thank You to a guy who has been alot of help in making the Rural Fire Pages more interesting. Justin Bentzinger has taken a lot of time to send me pictures, schedules, and informative articles to be included in the RFD Pages.

Honorable Mentions going to GPD Officers Brad Parker and Cary Amos for providing several different pictures to use on different pages.

Thank You Justin!!
