On a personal note one of the transports to other hospitals included a run to Denver with my granddaughter. She had to have emergency surgery to remove her appendix. Thanks for the good care the EMS people gave her and her mom (my daughter) during the stressful trip.

This first update of the new year will be short because I haven't received any training information etc. I did update the roster according to the most current listing we have in Dispatch. I left off the NW County First Responder because the one that had been
listed showed the same EMS # as one of the new ones added to the roster. So I figured she was no longer with the department or the number wouldn't have been reissued. If this incorrect someone please let me know.
The CAD lists the following calls for the EMS since the last update.
- 36 Flight for Life runs.

There are 4 new techs on the service after completing their testing. The new EMT-B's are Crystal Hernandez, John Hinger, Jake Conger, and Melissa Burke. Plus there are two new people from Colby working for the service... John Allen and Darren Howard. Congratulations to all the new EMTs for passing your tests.
Gleason also advised they will be holding another EMT class this fall so anyone interested please call him and add your
name to the list of potential students. You can contact him at the Goodland Regional Med Center at 785-890-3625.
On 07-16-07 the EMT's had a training class with the Rural Rescue Units. Practice involved learning the correct way for removing people from wrecked vehicles. Pictures from this training class can be found on the EMS Slideshow Page.

In doing a rough count for the EMS calls since the last update I counted at least 88 which includes 31 Flight for Life, 12 Accident Calls, and 14 Transports to other hospitals.
The Training for the new EMT's has been completed and the 4 area people taking the class took the State test on April 21st. The trainees are Crystal Hernandez, Jake Conger, John Hinger, and Melissa Burke. Melissa already works with the EMS as a driver but after passing the test she will be certified as an EMT-B. Bruce advised that all 4 passed the practical exam portion of the state testing, none of the students have received the results about the written portion. They have had some problems with the new I/O Solutions testing with the state and this class may have to revert back to the National Registry Exam but they are not sure yet.
Bruce sent me some pictures of the newest Med Unit that the Department received 01-05-07. I have added the pictures to the EMS Slideshow. You can view them plus pictures for 2 different training sessions on the Slideshow Page. Most all the EMS runs are being made with Med 1 the new ambulance. It is a 2006 Lifeline purchased from Rocky Mountain Emergency Vehicles in Denver for $107,000.00. Looking at the pictures it appears to have all the current equipment needed for many types of emergency useage. (Now I just hope we don't have any foggy nights with cattle running loose on I-70!)
Besides being the EMS Director, Bruce has been promoted to the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Goodland Regional Medical Center. The new duties involve writing or re-writing policies or procedures for emergencies, doing training sessions for hospital staff ie; tornado drills, severe weather drills etc. Congratulations Bruce!!!

With checking the CAD I found at least 50 calls for various health complaints and accidents that the EMS handled since the last update. Those plus about 28 Flight For Life calls and many other transports to hospitals in Denver, Hays, and other hospitals. Plus they have had a few times of Mock Calls for training of the students now taking the EMT classes. All in all they all stay busy!
01-29-07
The EMS like so many other departments have had a lot of extra work due to all the accidents caused by the recent Snow Storms. That plus many other calls for sick people needing to go to the hospital. Local calls plus transports to hospitals in Denver and Hays.

With this update I am not aware of any special training that the EMS may be taking other than they have a class training new EMT's. So I thought I'd post a list of the codes you may hear the EMS people using when transporting someone. It may help you in realizing what kind of emergency the crew is working with.

The above photo was taken showing the EMS standing by and giving aid to a Firefighter at the Townsend fire July 26th, 2006. It was a hot day and the firefighters needed some breaks and water to drink during the hours it took to get this fire contained. The EMS will stand by during structure fires or whenever needed just in case a firefighter may get injured. I don't think anyone was injured during this fire but the heat made it difficult to fight the fire. A RFD Slideshow shows more photos from this fire.
The EMS also had a training session with the GFD 10-16-06 on how to handle a patient trapped in a wrecked vehicle. I believe McB's donated the vehicle used in this exercise. The training was conducted at McB's business at 17th and Cherry. A Slideshow covering this training has been placed on the Rescue Unit Page.
I'm posting what info I have for the ones working with the EMS if corrections need to be made please let me know. I do not have a listing for the EMT's in Training so someone please let me know so we can say thanks to all the ones volunteering their time.

EMT Instructor Steve Rogers held a EMT Training Class with the help of the GFD a few weeks ago. I'm just late in getting this posted. I have made a Slideshow for the EMS with the pictures that were taken during this class. It
appears the EMT Trainees were getting to learn how to wear airpacks. I didn't realize that EMT's had to receive this type of training but I guess one never knows where you may have to go to give medical aid to someone. To view the Slideshow Click Here.
I have been told the EMS Department has received a trailer to use in major medical emergencies to set up a command type center. I wasn't able to go take the tour of the trailer but I'm sure it is nice and will come in handy whenever it may be needed.
The EMS has stayed busy with a lot of calls from routine transports to real emergency care. Plus stand bys for structure fires and other events. Plus it seems the hospital has more and more reasons to use the Air Ambulance for tranporting patients to Colorado and other hospitals. The EMS always gets called to pick up the Flight For Life Crew. They go to Renner Field and take the crew/medical staff to the hospital then wait and transport the patient and crew back to Renner Field.
I'm posting what info I have for the ones working with the EMS if corrections need to be made please let me know. I do not have a listing for the EMT's in Training so someone please let me know so we can say thanks to all the ones volunteering their time.

The EMS has been busy with several transports of patients with various illnesses since the last
update. Occasionally they handle calls where someone has fallen and unable to get up. Many times
they just need to help the person back in to their chair or bed with no medical reason to go to
hospital. Dispatch usually gets notified by Lifeline when something like that occurs and the EMS
gets notified by Dispatch.
EMT Steve Rogers was busy in Feb. with teaching CPR classes for several days. He managed to get
several of the City of Goodland employees plus some of the County Dispatchers certified or
recertified in CPR. Steve has a teaching style that keeps things rolling and interesting. It was
one of the better CPR class that I have ever taken. Thanks Again Steve.
The above picture is from the Kanorado Ambulance 'Med 3' taken in the KFD Station. The City of
Kanorado is wanting to find separate housing for the ambulance. It makes for tight quarters for
fire trucks and the ambulance sharing the same area. If anyone in the Kanorado area has ideas to
help with the problem please contact the City Hall.

This Update will be brief because I don't have a lot to work with as of yet. It has been 2 years
since I last wrote any of these for this website. Check the Home Page Link at the top of this
page to read more on the beginning of this site and why it was stopped for awhile.
Until I can start receiving better updates for this page I suggest you read the
Original Page to learn more on what the
EMS does and what areas they cover. There are also a few
Previous Updates that you can also read.
I have the links shown in a different color or you can find both the original and previous
updates by clicking on the Archive Link at the top of this page.
I hope this go round that I'm able to recieve more information about the EMS's activities. I
know the volunteer EMT's care enough to care for the sick and injured. Now I hope at least one
will help give information to make this page more interesting.
To help this page get better use the following link to send me ideas and information about the
EMS training and activities. I will need at least one EMT's help with giving information for
these updates.

I haven't received any Updates from the EMT's for their EMS Page. I have been told that Alan David is a Paramedic and works for Eagle Med and helps when he can with the Ambulance Calls. Alan must really like to work because he is also the Rural Assistant Fire Chief.
At this time I have no further information about any training or special projects the EMS may be involved with. I did see Med-5 go through the Christmas Parade decorated up real nice. I took a picture but with an old 110 Camera and haven't gotten the film developed yet. So if that turns out and with the way I get film developed I may have that picture to post around Easter Time. Sooooooooo if anyone else has a picture like that they would like posted to this page send me a copy.
There isn't any other Previous Update Page to view but you can see the Original Page by going to the Archives. Just click on the Archives Button at the top of this page.
