The GFD has recently been giving tours of the Fire Station to different groups of kids. I believe some were from the schools and others were Scouts. That plus recently they had a Bike Inspection and Repair for the community. This was held at McB's, 17th/Cherry. My grandson was able to take advantage of this and he thanks the Firemen and McB's for putting this program on.

The following information comes from Chief James: GFD is going to put on a high angle/confined space/low angle rope rescue class on the 12th, 13th and the 14th of June. The class is being taught by KU. If the wheat will hold off for a little bit, we will be able to do this class using ADMs grain elevator. It should be an exciting class. I will get pictures of all of this when we do the class. Also, ADM, Frontier Ag, Sun Opta, and Scoular Grain all donate a combined amount of $4,056 to purchase confined space rescue equipment for the GFD. This gear will help the GFD rescue victims at grain elevators, and also in manholes on the streets. The gear can also be used for High/low angle rescue. This is a very exciting time for the GFD, and the community.

The following list was taken from the CAD of the various calls the GFD has had since the last update. Hopefully I did not miss any major calls. Also you can use the Forum Link above to leave your own comments about this or other pages on this website.

House Fire on 01-27-09
GFD and RFD Work together on this house fire 01-27-09

The above house fire occurred on 01-27-09 at 224 E. 11th st. at 5:48am. The temperature at the time was -2 degrees. The house is a total loss. This is the house where the Eagle Med Flight for Life crew stayed in between flights. They had returned from a flight and when entering the home they smelled smoke. They checked but did not see any flames. A short time later a worker at the bank did see flames in the roof area and reported the fire. The GFD were paged and by their request the RFD was also paged to assist with this fire. Others involved were the EMS for stand by in case anyone was hurt and the Red Cross supplying food and drink for the firefighters. A slideshow with pictures provided by the GFD Fire Chief can be viewed at 2009 GFD Slideshow. Links to previous slideshows can be found at the bottom of this page.

The following list was taken from the CAD to catch up on the various calls the GFD has had since the last update. Hopefully I did not miss any major calls. Also you can use the Forum Link above to leave your own comments about this or other pages on this website.

Multi Agency Live Fire Training
Multi Agency GFD, RFD, and Colby's FD Live Fire Training 08-19-08

The GFD has been busy they past few months and getting some good training. The following information comes from GFD Chief Brian James.

August 5th Live Fire Training at 317 E. 10th St. Goodland Kansas
A resident of Goodland was tearing down this home so, he let the City of Goodland Fire Department do some live fire training inside. We used wooden pallets and some bed mattresses and just a little bit of gas and we lit the fire in the corners of the rooms. We did about four fires in the house we did not burn the house down. We would let the fire grow and watch how the fire works, and then we would knock the fire down and watch it again, and then we would put it out. We also trained with the thermal imager and found that the ceiling was about 1000 degrees and the floor got to about 500 degrees. This was fun training and very educational for my firefighters. The homeowner is going to let us go back in the house and do some more training next month since, the house won't be torn down until October. We are probably going to cut some holes in the roof and do some training on how to make windows bigger by using a chain saw to make an emergency opening next time we are in the house; this should be good training. I am very greatful for this individual for letting us use his house for this vital training that my men need. I hope we can use more homes in Goodland that need torn down to do the same types of training.

On the 6th of September around 4:30 pm I heard a Schnook helicopter from my house. I drove down to the airport where it had landed and started to take pictures. I talked with a Lieutenant and a Staff Sergeant and asked them if it would be alright to take pictures of the helicopter with the ARFF truck and they said sure! They were very nice and they told me that if I wanted to crawl around on the helicopter that I could. They said that they were coming from Texas and that they were stopping for the night then go to Eagle Colorado to do some training the next day. The helicopter brought a crowd and by the time I left there had to be about 5 or 6 civilians going through the helicopter.

The GFD and the Ladies Auxilary did a Water Wars for the kids on Flatlanders. The idea came from my Assistant Chief Justin Stasser, that is what he would do with his old fire department in Nebraska. What we did was we built two polls on semi tires with a cable going across. We would then have an empty keg with a pully on top in the middle of the polls. We would then have the kids wear a bunker coat and helmet and two of the firefighters would help the kids and they would shoot water at the keg trying to make it to the other teams poll. It is kind of like tug of war but with water and a keg. The Ladies Auxilary would charge $2 per kid and that money goes to families in Sherman County who have been hit by a home structure fire. The money will help those families get back on their feet by buying clothes or food. The Ladies made about $150 to $170 for the water fight and about $12 just in donations. Every little bit helps and the GFD and Ladies Auxilary are very greatful.

Thanks Brian for your input to this page.

There are new slideshows added to the 2008 GFD Slideshow for the above 3 events plus 3 others. One showing a multi agency fire training with GFD, RFD, and Colby's FD. One School Safety Class with the RFD. Plus one accident where the GFD had to stand by due to pole damage. All previous pictures can still be viewed by clicking on the Pre 2008 GFD Slideshow

This is a short update to post new GFD Slideshows covering Halloween, Jet Crash at Renner Field, KSFFA Training, New Engine 1, and a West School Visit with the Kids. I will be doing regular updates again in January.

10-10-07
The GFD now has a Women's Auxillary lead by Kelly James. They held a Fund Raiser during Flatlanders to help victims of home fires. Bob Juleson and Matt Breininger dressed up as Sparky the fire safety dog to take pictures with the kids. Each picture came with a fire safety bag that had a fire safety pencil, eraser, sticker, and a fire safety tattoo, that was given from the GFD. The bags also had donations from Gambinos Pizza. The Peoples State Bank donated their lot for the Fire Trucks to be parked and they also bought the fire helmets given to kids. Funds donated for pictures raised between $600-$700 by the Auxillary. Justin Stasser gave tours of the ARFF truck and he would let the kids start the truck and let them turn on the siren. He also showed the kids and adults the tools on the truck and how everything worked. The GFD Slideshow has pictures showing the GFD Flatlanders Display.

Other new GFD Slideshow cover the Stand By at Renner Field while a Canadian Navy Helicopter received a hot fueling. Which means it was running while being fueled. A stand by at the Goodland Hospital for a Helicopter Flight for Life that lands next to the hospital. The Goodland High School Homecoming Bonfire and pictures from a Burn Trailer Training Class.

There have been changes within the GFD since the last update; Scott Gilmer resigned from the department and Brian James was given the job by the city manager. Brian has since changed the way his department will notify dispatch when responding to calls. No longer will there be Truck 1, 2, or 3 etc. Now they are Engine 1, 2, or 3 etc. Brian will not use his radio number when responding to calls, he has become Fire Command 1. Makes life interesting for dispatchers trying to learn all the changes new department heads may implement.

The GFD is still doing a lot of training for the firefighters and future plans include a fire school put on by KU. It may not be KU but a place that will come here to train the firefighters. The volunteers should be thanked for all the time they invest in training to help keep Goodland safe.

The CAD shows the GFD had the following calls since the last update.
  • 05-11-07 Hazmat Stand by for gas leak 11th/Cherry area
  • 05-22-07 Stove Fire 300 block Willow Road

The CAD shows the GFD has had several Training Sessions since the last update.
  • 03-13-07 Training at Renner Field
  • 03-19-07 Training at ADM
  • 03-26-07 Training at 11th/Cattletrail
  • 04-02-07 Training at City Shop
  • 05-07-07 Training at 510 W. 15th
Also on 03-21-07 Members of the GFD assisted a Med Unit in lifting an ill person in the 1600 block of Caldwell and again at Renner Field. 04-03-07 the CAD shows there was a GFD stand by in the 200 blk of Cottonwood Rd but did not state the reason for the stand by.

Then Chief Gilmer was called out at least 3 times to check other incidents. On 04-03-07 to check on a training fire from the previous evening that had flared up in the high winds at the City Shop. He was able to contain the flare up with no problems. 04-14-07 a burn was found during the night at the Holiday Inn Express Construction Site. It had been a controlled burn but Gilmer had to talk to the employees about that burn. 04-15-07 people thought they smelled gas fumes in the 100 blk of W. 14th, it was a faulty boiler. Aquila checked there was no gas leak.

As most everyone is aware there have been a lot of changes with the GFD and Fire Rescue Unit. The GFD lost all their original Firefighters due to conflicts with the Fire Chief. Personally I am sorry it happened and wished things could have been worked out differently. In keeping with the theme of not airing complaints on this site I'll just say life goes on.

Due to the changes I have decided to stop a separate link for Fire Rescue. I will continue to include a link on this page for all the previous updates for Fire Rescue when it was all under the GPD. Starting with this update any Fire Recue calls will be included with either the GPD or RFD depending upon which had to handle the call. The way I understand it is the GFD will handle all fire calls and Rescue calls within the City Limits. RFD will take Rescue calls out of the city limits and the HazMat calls anywhere within Sherman Co and the City of Goodland.

I know the GFD is busy training new Firefighters and thanks to all that have volunteered to join and take the time to do a lot of training in a short period of time. Again if anyone is taking pictures at these training sessions or of any fire/rescue calls please send them to me and they can be posted to this page.

The following is the list of new Firefighters that has been given to dispatch. There will probably be changes to and from this list for a time until things get settled down. I will try to keep it as updated as we are kept aware of changes.

Things have been fairly quiet for the GFD (Not counting Fire Rescue) since my last update. There are 3 structure fire calls that units responded to but unknown to me what type of structures were involved. Nor do I know the extent of damage beings sometimes a call ends up being a false alarm. The calls show on 12-07-06 to the 400 block of W 7th, 12-18-06 500 block of W. 17th, and 01-16-07 300 block of W. 12th. The GFD had units join the Christmas Parade on 11-18-06 and was on a stand by 11-17-06 at McB's.

While attempting to do some updates I have tried looking through our CAD system to list calls for the GFD since the last update. I do not have any other reports to talk about this time. Oct 27th there was a structure fire at 1502 Texas and an alarm call at the Comfort Inn. Nov. 6th it shows a misc call at 403 Harrison, I do not know what that involved. Plus the rescue unit had about 3 accident calls that they responded to.

The most recent GFD roster shows 2 new firefighters have joined the force. Welcome to Lance Goodman and Greg Unger.

Thanks to the GFD and all others that were there to give a Welcome Home Parade for Soldier, Ernie Gonzales, that returned to Goodland Sat. Night 10-21-06 after having been badly hurt by a bomb in Iraq. If anyone has pictures from this event I would like to have them to post.

Two Pictures of the GFD Trucks Taken During the 2006 Fair Parade

At this time I don't have any fires to report on, If there has been any, I don't have pictures or information to post. The GFD did have some recent training, 10-16-06 where they used the Jaws of Life for removal of a person (Dummy) from a wrecked vehicle. They did this along with the EMS people. Thanks to Stan sending me pictures there is a Slideshow on the Rescue Page to view.

Before I came to work tonight, I was told the GFD was called out because of an oil spill on the road behind Presto. Someone made an illegal dumping that had to be contained for cleaning. Many people do not realize all the different things the GFD has to contend with besides fires! If anyone has any information on who may have dumped this oil please contact the GPD or GFD.

Thanks to the GFD and all others that were there to give a Welcome Home Parade for Soldier, Ernie Gonzales, that returned to Goodland Sat. Night 10-21-06 after having been badly hurt by a bomb in Iraq.

Scott Gilmer has been working as the Fire Chief for a month now, I hope all is going well. I know he now gets to enjoy the experience of being called out during the middle of the night. I had to do that a few nights ago when one of the PD Officers found a anhydrous tank leaking at the Frontier Coop. The Officer didn't have the proper protective equipment to wear to shut it off. So Scott responded and took care of the situation.

Knock on Wood it has been a quiet couple of months for the GFD. According to the CAD entries on May 1st they had a training session. Maybe this was more to get to know on what changes, if any, that Scott was making beings he officially became Chief on that day. On May 5th there was a vehicle fire at Exit 19. May 11th the GFD was called for a stand by with a possible gas leak at 1520 Center. May 12th another stand by at 16/Main the CAD didn't list what this stand by concerned but maybe from an accident that did happen in that area a few weeks ago. There was a structure fire May 24th at 515 W 16. Unknown to me how much damage was occurred after the initial report of smoke coming out a window. There was a call to the Airport on May 26th but unknown what the problem may have been. There was a broken gas meter at 517 W 9th on May 28th where the Haz Mat Unit responded.

So all in all it has been a fairly quiet time for GFD. Note: Calls concerning accidents where the Rescue Unit gets called out will be on their page. I know they are both handled by the GFD but I'm trying to list the calls on the correct pages.

If I have missed any important calls or information, please let me know so I can correct it. Also I have not heard if we have an Assist Fire Chief yet. Not sure if Scott has made that call yet. I will post the information as soon as I can after I find out.

Congratulations to Scott Gilmer, as on May 1st he will officially be Goodland's Fire Chief. He had been Assistant Fire Chief now Acting Chief so it will be nice for him to become officially the Fire Chief. I haven't been told yet if anyone has been named as the new Assistant. That may have to wait until Scott officially takes over.

I know since the last update the GFD had at least one house fire they responded to, thanks to Stan Duell for sending photos from that fire and some from an accident plus some other pictures. To view all of these photos Check out the Slideshow. According to Stan the house fire at 804 w 17th was contained in the ceiling around the fireplace. The pictures showing a rolled semi was from an accident in 04-24-2004 that occurred on the curves at the rest area west of Goodland. He wasn't sure about the details of this accident but believed the tanker had wrecked, and the firemen had not determaned what was on the truck. They had parked away from the semi and started walking to the scene, as they were walking to it, a truck headed eastbound blew a tire as it passed and as you can imagine, some firemen were a little rattled thinking it was the semi blowing up. Stan also sent some pictures of the GFD Trucks outside the Firehouse plus some pictures showing EMS people being trained in some recue work.

Then Deputy Brad Parker took some pictures of a 1939 Antique Firetruck he saw sitting on the Walmart Parking lot March 24th. Brad talked to the owner to get permission for using these pictures. The truck is a 1939 Diamond T with 13,000 original miles. It is owned by Jim Wilkens of Atwood, KS. Jim is an avid collector of all things Diamond T and takes this and others to various vehicle shows around the country. If anyone wants to contact Jim he gave his email as diamondt@ruraltel.net. These photos are included in the GFD Slideshow. Be sure to click on the slideshow you want to view to get the show started.

Currently there are some changes within the GFD due to Chief Dean Jensen having left his position with the city. Assist Chief Scott Gilmer has taken over the duties as acting Chief until the city hires another permanent Fire Chief. The last I heard the city manager was beginning the interview process of the applicants for the position. It is unknown to me if any of the current Firefighters have applied for the position. If so I hope they are given good consideration and the city hires from within the department or locally.

According to CAD entries for the GFD they have been called to 3 Stucture Fires, 1 Dumpster Fire, 2 Hazmat calls, 2 Misc Fire Calls plus several stand by calls since the first of this year. That's not counting Fire Rescue calls for accidents etc. I really have no idea what a misc fire call could be about, I didn't realize we had that option to choose when dispatching a fire department. I wasn't nosey enough to go all the way in to the call to see if I could find out what it detailed. May do that later but right now trying to get these updates finished. :)

Troy asked me to do a bit more for fellow Firefighter Jeff White, to help everyone remember. I found this poem on the RescueHouse.com website. They have a lot of different articles and items dealing with firefighters.

Jeff didn't die in the line of duty but could have at some point. He is missed by his family, friends, and fellow firefighters. I hope this poem works in showing respect.

Jeff White
Ode to Firemen

All honor to the red-clad heroes;
the boys who ran the machine
Over the highway to rescue,
quick to danger's scene;

Where angry flames devour
the poor man's earthly store,
Bidding to all a defiance,
with its wild and sullen roar,

Tell me not of the gallants
who wear the helmets bright,
Who boast of their deeds
in some degrading fight;

But sound aloud the praises,
and give the victor-crown
To our noble-hearted Firemen,
who fear not danger's frown.

They of many a conflict,
with the haughty demon of flame,
With rising sun of the morning,
their gallant deeds proclaim.

The signal that strikes terror,
to them is known full well;
Forth to do and dare they spring
at the tap of the bell.

Some one's home is falling
in the midnight solemn hour;
Now the heroic legion spring forth
to show their power.

Listen to the rumble,
as they clatter over the way;
There's hope as they speed on
In determined and gallant array

Soon the fiery days will he over;
the machine will be of the past,
And over the forms of our heroes
the mantle of age will be cast,

As they tread to the portals,
and view the setting sun,
Then fall; arrayed in the glories
of the gallant deed they've done.

Honor! to such brave brothers;
let the shout sweep to the sky.
Weave garland thru the memory
as the ages swiftly fly,

Over each Fireman's grave
write with honor's pen:
Here lieth one who delighted
to aid his fellow men.

This Update will be brief because I don't have a lot to work with as of yet. It has been 2 years since I last wrote any of these for this website. Check the Home Page Link at the top of this page to read more on the beginning of this site and why it was stopped for awhile.

Until I can start receiving better updates for this page I suggest you read the Original Page to learn more on what the GFD does and what areas they cover. There are also a few Previous Updates that you can also read. I have the links shown in a different color or you can find both the original and previous updates by clicking on the Archive Link at the top of this page.

One Update that I can mention is a sad event, the lost of one of the GFD volunteers, Jeff White. Jeff had used a lot of his time in helping the GFD and Rescue Unit be as good as they are. Jeff you will be missed.

To help this page get better use the following link to send me ideas and information about the GFD training and activities. I will need the help of at least one firefighter to give me information for these updates.

I do not have any regular updates to report for the Goodland Fire Department. I know they have fire calls they respond to and have regular training sessions, yet I have no one reporting any of this to me. I will keep trying to get some sort of connection so that in the furture this page can hold more interesting or current matter.

Until then I will add some links that I hope will be of interest to the readers of this page. One I have found that deals with possible terrorism with radiation material is meant for First Responders and Firefighters. There are several links in this one site answering a lot of questions about this possible hazzard that may be faced. It comes out of the Center for Disease Control and can be read by Clicking Here.

The Goodland Fire Department was called out to a house fire in the early hours of 08/04/02. Sad to say this time the call came to late for them to save the home at 1525 Montana. No one was living in this house at the time of the fire and thankfully no one was hurt. This picture was taken by GPD Officer Cary Amos while the G.F.D. was trying to put out this fire.

I realize the G.F.D. has had other calls since the last update was posted but this is the first time someone has given something for an update posting. So anytime any Firefighter would like to have information posted to this page.....send me the information and I'll be glad to post what I can.

Thanks to PD Officer Cary Amos for this Picture

I don't have any updates reference training or activities but do have some pictures taken from an unoccupied house fire at 8th and Grand. This fire was discovered by GPD Officers Johnson and Terry. Officer Johnson was at the GPD office when he began to smell smoke. He and Terry started driving around the area of the GPD trying to locate the source of the smoke when the fire was found. This was in the middle of the night and thus probably prevented the whole home being lost to fire. The Officers took these pictures after daylight but none during the fire. Thanks to the GPD Officers and the GFD for saving this home.
