The only change that I know about is Kim Gillespie has taken over the duties as the Animal Control Officer. She has been a welcome addition to the department and works hard at her job. There is a one new officer, Kody Sanchez, who is now taking his Law Enforcment Certification Training at KLETC. Otherwise I'm sorry to say I have not been given any new info to post for this page.

Every now and then a situation happens that gives Police Officers a chance to to prove that they can have a sense of humor. This happened recently to a couple of the GPD Officers who had received a loud party complaint. When the officers got to the scene the party folks took off so the 2 officers left their calling cards. Thus the following two pictures of their art work was left for the party people to find. If nothing else the party was quiet after the officers left and the ones that had complained would be happy with the silence! Thanks Bill for sharing the pictures.

Other than the rare momments for some laughs the GPD has stayed busy with all the various reports, accidents, etc. Officer Showalter has also been giving different self defense classes. She will give a self defense class to citizens when they call the GPD requesting one.

I didn't receive any local information/pictures from the GPD to post for this update but did receive the following from Frank Tabor. Frank had worked for the GPD but since has gone to Iraq to Train Iraqi Police Officers. He said here are a couple pictures, one is a vehicle search class and the other is a defensive tactics course I taught to the IPS. I am very busy this time over here. I am working two Local Police stations 1 has 365 IPS the other has 100 IPS. I have also been placed in charge of the District Headquarters to over see all other stations in the districts progress. I am enjoying it right now and hoping to stay busy so time goes by fast. Well take care and tell everyone hi for me.

The GPD Officers are now beginning to carry the Non Lethan Taser Weapon. Some have already taken the test to become qualified and the others will soon have their turn to qualify. I believe one of the things each officer has to do before they can carry the Taser is to be shot with one. I've been told it doesn't hurt but while it is turned on you can not move. The Tasers can be a good weapon to control someone that may become violent.
There is a new Animal Control Officer, Dustin Zelfer who is replacing Tonya Magana. Tonya has moved back to Arizona and her husband GPD Officer Carlos will soon be moving also. Carlos just had to wait until his job opened up before he can join his wife and kids. We wish them good luck in their new adventures. Also the GPD decided not to have part time officers so Ryan Weis is no longer working.

At this time no one with the GPD has given me any information to add to this page. But I have added pictures to the GPD Slideshows taken of the GPD Fairbooth and other scenes from the Fair. Plus pictures from Officer Frankie Hayes going away party. He and his family moved back to Louisanna. There is still an opening for a PD Officer if anyone reading this wants to contact the GPD and apply for the job.

I have checked with several of the GPD officers for updates/information for this page but there seems to be little to report. Other than Officer Jim Gillespie and Mike Fenner recently took a 32 hour class in Garden City and are now Child Safety Seat Technicians. If you need help installing a child's saftey seat contact the GPD. Also Jim and Cpl Kroskey volunteered to be shot with a Taser during a demonstration the GPD had to see if they are going to get the Non Lethal Weapons. I was told it was a long 5 secs but it did not hurt but kept them from moving.

Since the last update the GPD has stayed busy with all the normal duties and activities plus working a few severe weather storms with tornado warnings etc. Several of the officers have been taking different training classes to help them in performing their jobs better. Carlos Magana has graduated from KLETC and now back working fulltime.
I have added some new pictures to the GPD Slideshow covering a bomb scare from last fall at the Vo Tech. Lucky it was a false alarm and the bomb sniffing dogs called in found nothing. There are some pictures of Dollar General after the car ran through the front of the building. For anyone that may think the Animal Control Officer has an easy job, think again when it comes to having to remove a few dozen cats from a home. The smell can be horrible and you have to protect yourself from decease with protective clothing. Plus a few photos taken by Officer Amos from the East side of Goodland showing the tornado that formed just North of Edson on 03-28-07. The same storm that later had the tornado that did so much damage in Cheyenne Co. The S.O. Page has pictures showing animal and other damage from that storm.
For fun here are 2 trick shot pictures taken by Officers Jim Gillespie and Doug Whitson.

It appears that the driver of this pick up was having a bad day. I'd call this a BIG OOOPS! This accident was in the Wal Mart's parking lot. It was just one of the different accidents the GPD has had to work.

To start this update I'm posting a couple of pictures from Frank Tabor showing some of what he is dealing with after he left the GPD. He has been in Iraq training Iraqis to become police officers. He said the 2 officers with him are from Texas and they all have been doing a lot of training. The pictures are from a vehicle bomb that had went off in front of one of the Iraq Police Stations. He said since the fighting had picked up in Baghdad, the area he is in is starting to get hit harder. At the time of his writting he said they had been hit with 5 IEDs in 2 weeks time and so far he was okay. Frank wanted to say hi to everyone and to say take care and he should be home in about 4 months.

The city now has a new Animal Control Officer, Tonya Magana. Welcome to Tonya and Good Luck in working with all the critters. Tonya is married to Officer Carlos Magana who is currently in training at the Police Academy *KLETC*.
Chief Smee and Officer Jim Gillespie both took and passed the recent Ham Radio classes. The final test was given in Colby and all involved with the different 911 departments passed the final test. Ham radios can be a fun hobby but one of the main reasons to be licensed is: in case we ever have a major event and lose other means of communications. Ham radios are usually able to keep communications going.
Officer Frankie Hayes recently gave me pictures showing his patrol unit after hitting a deer a few years ago. He was lucky that neither he or his passegers were hurt during this accident. I have added the pictures to the GPD Slideshow.
We were glad when Cpl Greg Kroskey was able to return to work after having time off during his wife, Donna's sudden illness and death. Thanks to everyone that helped in any manner with the various activities to collect donations to help Greg with all the extra unexpected expenses.

Ice and Snow Hits NW Kansas
The Ice and Snow that began in December 2006 has been coming in waves about every week end for the past several weeks. It has helped keep the GPD busy working accidents and helping when they can with transporting emergency workers to and from work. There is a new GPD Slideshow with different photos taken around Goodland showing the snow conditions. Thanks to Officers Amos, Whitson, and Gillespie for providing the snow pictures.
Also thanks to Officer Whitson for providing some pictures of a semi that accidentally ran over an electric pole's guard posts. This accident was worked by Corp. Kroskey near the Conoco Travel Center on 27 hwy. You can see the pictures on the GPD Slideshow Page.
Animal Control Officer Lane Terry has left the department so if you are interested in that job there is an opening. Officer Carlos Magana is currently attending the Police Academy *KLETC* near Hutchinson, Ks. The weather hasn't made it easy for him to get back n forth on the week ends.

GPD Officer Cary Amos with School Kids
A few weeks ago one of the school kids asked Officer Amos to be a Show n Tell item. Amos agreed and went to the school and showed the student's class different things about being a police officer. Above is one of 4 pictures showing this school visit. To view the rest go to the GPD Slideshow. Thanks Cary for always being nice to the kids, my grandson enjoyed the day you stopped and talked to him while on patrol. He also liked the cards and sticker you gave him. It lets kids know they don't always have to be afraid of someone in uniform.
The GPD now has a new familiar face working as the most recent officer to join the force. Doug Whitson decided to come out of Law Enforcement retirement and joined the Department. For those not aware Doug began his L.E. career at the GPD then moved over to the Sherman County Sheriff's Office as a deputy, undersheriff, and then Sheriff. Welcome back Doug!
Cpl Bill Fulcher has completed the training to become the department's Range Master. Now they all can keep up better with their firing range qualifications. From talking with Bill I have learned there is a lot involved in becoming a Range Master. More so than just being at the range and doing your shooting to become qualified to carry a weapon.
Check out the Award Page to see the most current award that includes GPD Officer Jim Gillespie. It didn't get included in the last update because I didn't have the picture at the time of update. Anytime you may think someone needs an extra Atta boy/girl please let me know and something will be said and done.
Also J.R. Johnson wanted to say hi to everyone and has added his address to the other previous GPD Officer's links at the bottom of this page. He said he will be in Rifle Co. until January then is transferring to the prison in Sterling, Co. Hmmmm maybe I need to add that he works at the prisons....not an inmate! :)

GPD Preparing to Lead the 2006 Fair Parade
The GPD has a new Animal Control officer, Lane Terry. He joined the department a few weeks ago. So don't be surprised to see a new face whenever you have a critter problem. **Update Note 10-25-06** John Bowman had left the GPD and is now working at the Prison near Burlington,Co. The GPD now has a new Officer Carlos Magana that left working for the Prison to become a Patrol Officer. Good Bye to John and Welcome to Carlos.
A few nights ago the city had several citizen's vehicles broken in to and items stolen. Thank Goodness it was a short lived crime spree,
the ones involved with doing the break ins were caught the next day. Officer Gillespie was the one on duty when the clues to who was doing the crimes started to break wide open. He and others then had a couple of long days to work getting all the facts gathered to file this case. Good Job to all involved!
Last month ended up being a sad time for officer Cary Amos, with the death of his Dad, Sam. Plus having lost his Mother just a few months earlier. Our sympathies go out to Cary. One highlight of the deal was a mini GPD Reunion with several Officers that used to work for the GPD came to the Memorial Service. The following picture shows some of the former and current GPD Officers.

The GPD is short one officer at the time of this post. Officer Frank Tabor has left to go to Iraq
to train Iraqi's on how to be police officers. Currently he is finishing his testing to be sure he
can go. Once he passes all the tests he will begin training on how to teach the Iraqis. He will be
gone 1 year doing this service. We wish him well and hope all the ones going to train the Iraqis
have a lot of success so they can take care of their own security.
The GPD will also be losing Leslie Knitig as the Animal Control Officer. She has passed the tests
and will be becoming a Kansas State Trooper. Her first assignment will be in the Oberlin, Ks area.
The following is a picture of Leslie keeping McGruff under control. :) Leslie will be missed but
also this is a good advancement for her.

The GPD has been staying busy with all the normal activities such as taking reports for different reasons. Anything
from vehicle accidents, burglary, thefts, and other crimes. Plus trying to patrol to keep school zones safe from
speeders etc. There have been several animal complaints dealing with either barking dogs or dogs running at large. The dogs running free can become a real problem and a danger to others. One of the officers was bitten by such a
dog a few weeks ago when he was trying to catch it.
2 of the officers, Cpl Bill Fulcher and Patrolman Cary Amos received a commendation from the city for their efforts
in helping a woman that had stopped breathing. Their immediate starting of CPR was neccessary until the ambulance
crew arrived and took over the care. Good Job guys!
Dave Becker read the last update and he also wanted to say hi to everyone and to let them know he is now working
in Halstead, Ks. When he first left the GPD he had moved to AZ and worked as a jailer but now back on patrol.
You can visit the Halstead Website here.
I will start a listing of previous employees and links for any that want to send them in to be posted. I will post them
at the end of the updates.
Here is a Picture of the GPD Officers that I thought was nice.

This Update will be brief because I don't have a lot to work with as of yet. It has been 2 years since I last wrote any of these for this website. Check the Home Page Link at the top of this page to read more on the beginning of this site and why it was stopped for awhile.
The GPD has had a few changes in the 2 years since the last updates to this website. Some officers have left and new ones have started. Officer Bob Juleson is now a Cheyenne Co. Deputy and Officer Brad Parker has become a Sherman Co. Deputy. They are at different departments but still close enough to stay in contact with all the local people.
Joni Meyer, gives the department a female officer to help deal with all the activities. She came to the GPD from the Thomas Co Sheriff's Dept. Then 2 local men have become officers, Mike Fenner and John Bowman. John is just now finishing his training and will be out on patrol by himself this week end. Mike is still at the KLETC Police Academy and has a few weeks to go before he returns to work and patrolling.
There has been some other officer changes in the past 2 years and I'm not going to try and remember everything but the Chief has remained the same. Jim Gillespie was promoted to Patrol Officer from Animal Control. Leslie Knitig has taken over the Animal Control position. She also has become the first Female Firefighter with the RFD. Check the Original Page to find the list of current officers with the GPD.
For first time readers and anyone else that would like to know more on the basics of what the GPD does and the area they cover read the Original Page. There is also Previous Updates that you can also read. I have the links shown in a different color or you can find both the original and previous updates by clicking on the Archive Link at the top of this page.
For those that worked with or knew Doug Storie when he worked for the GPD, he is
now Town Marshall in Coldwater,KS. You can check out his town's website http://www.coldwaterkansas.com
To help this page get better use the following link to send me ideas and information about the GPD training and activities. I will need at least one officer's help with giving information for these updates.

Well Folks expect to be seeing another new face or two in the near furture of the GPD. Officer
J.R. Johnson has already left and moved back to Colorado. We wish him lots of luck in whatever
he will be doing.
Plus we will soon be losing an old friend Cpl Dave Becker will soon be leaving and heading out
for the desert heat. He and his family are moving to AZ. He has his work lined up and will be
staying in the Law Enforcement Field. Hope all goes well for you and yours, Dave.
I'm including on this page a picture of a rollover on I-70 near Exit 17. I'm not real positive there
were any PD Officers at the scene, but have been told some off duty ones were there to help.

The GPD has a new Officer, his name is Frank Tabor. Frank has moved here from Texas. Goodland and Sherman Co. Welcomes You.
The PD has been busy working with other Law Enforcement Departments in making alot of Drug Busts. That along with the normal and sometimes not so normal day to day activities. The PD has also been setting up and doing many ID kits for the kids at various areas in town. They have been going to the schools and using the ID kits on the kids with the parents permission. This involves taking the child's picture and thumb print. These are then attached to an ID card for the parents to finish filling out all the personal information for the child. This becomes a good process in case the child ever needs to be identified.
One of the PD Officers, Cary Amos has also helped with talking to the kids with McGruff the Crime Dog. You can view those pictures on the Awards page. Note: You will now have to click on the Archive to find the page this comment was in reference to.

I do not have many updates for GPD but I have been told starting in January the officers will be working slightly different schedules. Actually the times remain the same for most officers but the 2 Corporals and 1 Officer/Detective will also be rotating and working all 3 shifts. Working the midnight shift on a regular bases will be different for them. More Officers out there working and helping to keep the Midnight Dispatcher awake!!!!

A few weeks ago...sorry right now I don't have the date...Officer Brad Parker had an interesting
accident to work. Somehow the driver of the vehicle shown in the following pictures ran over a
post at the local WalMart. Besides running over the post he had his vehicle get stuck on top of the
post.
I received copies of these pictures from 2-3 different people because many actually saw this
accident occur. I am only posting 2 of the pictures because I do not know who the driver was and
thus do not have his permission to show him in a picture. Sorry Brad, the one I had showing you
working this accident also showed the driver.

The City of Goodland has lifted the water ban......Back to Normal for water usage!!!!
08-09-2002
I haven't received any official updates from anyone at the G.P.D. but I know they have been busy the
past few months with robberies, thefts, domestic violence cases, a shooting, etc. Lots of things to
keep the officers busy.
BUT I MUST SAY....... This week I wouldn't have wanted to be a Police Officer. They have had
to deal with more abuse from some of the Goodland citizens than at any other time. Why??? Because
they are having to be what I'll call the Sod Squad (that is meant to be a joke!!!) With the severe
rain shortage the county has been suffering this year, the city has had to put in use a plan to
conserve water.
It is something new to happen or at least it has been several years since there has been a need like
this to conserve our water. I have lived here since 1985 and do not recall it ever being enforced
during the years until now. Some citizens have just been confused over the new watering rules for
grass. That wasn't helped by the area paper printing 2 different set of rules. But some people
just think the rules should not apply to their grass.
To those folks I have to say sorry but I'd rather make sure I have water to drink and shower with
than having a perfect green lawn. Besides the way it is set, the grass is still going to get enough
water to keep it from dying. When it cools off and more rain comes the grass will recuperate.
But if things keep going like they are and wells start sucking air instead of water...where will
we all be? Then that grass may die for sure!
I really don't understand what the people that are complaining so much are thinking. There is a
major water shortage going on! The county has had a burn ban for several weeks now plus the city
also began a burn ban. Well this is meant to be an update.......not for me to be on a SoapBox.
Most people understand the reasoning behind this water conservation measures. It's the few that
